Season's Greetings from OES President Jerry Carroll
Season?s greetings from OES President Jerry Carroll
Seasons greetings to all our OES members as we get ready to start a
new year. Our membership has increased and we have several new Chapters
with others being organized. Our two OCEANS Conferences in Santander, Spain
and Kona, Hawaii were very successful. We will have OCEANS Conferences in
Yeosu, Korea and Hampton Roads, Virginia in 2012. We had our first Conference
organized by Societies in the IEEE Division IX on Sustainable and Integrated
Transportation FISTS 2011 in Vienna, Austria. Our OTC Conference was expanded
with an Arctic OTC in Houston in February and OTC Brazil in October. Our
OES Members are a vital part of the OTC Technical Program.. We had our 10th
Current, Waves and Turbulence Measurement Workshop in Monterey, CA. in March
and participated in SYMPOL in India in November. Under the direction of
Editor-in-Chief Bill Carey, our Journal of Oceanic Engineering has maintained
its high standards. Thanks to all our volunteers and to our members for
another great year. Special thanks to our retiring ADCOM members and welcome
to our new ADCOM members. -- Jerry C Carroll, President, IEEE/OES
OES Members Malcolm Heron and Shahriar Negahdaripour elevated to IEEE Fellow

year does not exceed one-tenth of one percent of the total voting Institute
membership. Details at http://www.ieee.org/membership_services/membership/fellows.
Please join us in congratulating Malcolm Heron for his contributions
to the application of radio science to oceanic and terrestrial remote sensing,
and Shahriar Negahdaripour for contributions to underwater computer vision.
OES member Dr.. G. Clifford Carter receives the 2012 IEEE Jack S. Kilby
Signal Processing Medal
The Jack S. Kilby Signal Processing Medal is presented for outstanding achievements
in signal processing. Details at: http://www.ieee.org/about/awards/medals/kilby.html
Please join us in congratulating Dr. G. Clifford Carter for contributions
to the fundamentals of coherence and time-delay estimation and to underwater
acoustics signal processing.

USA Pavilion - University of Virginia Student Ambassador Program
The USA Pavilion at Expo 2012 will present an interactive, exciting and educational story that highlights America?s relationship with the Expo theme of the ?Living Ocean and Coast.? Featuring the themes of Diversity, Wonder and Solutions, the USA Pavilion will share the voices and hopes of the American people with our friends and partners in Korea and around the globe. The 12,000-square foot exhibition space will house exhibits and programming that represent the unique and diverse nature of America?s ocean and coastal environments and communities.
College undergraduate and graduate students have the opportunity to be part of this once in a lifetime experience through the Student Ambassador Program, a partnership between the USA Pavilion and the University of Virginia. This program recruits and trains volunteer students to serve as guides and national representatives for the United States at Expo 2012 in Yeosu, South Korea.
