In Memoriam - Jean-Pierre HERMAND

JEAN-PIERRE HERMAND passed away suddenly on September 3, 2018. He was a father, professor, mentor, colleague and a dear friend. The glimmer in his eyes and his mischievous smile could easily illuminate a room and bring great joy to those around him. If he could have traveled at the speed of light, he would have, but instead he took his special bicycle everywhere. He leaves behind three children and his beloved wife, Dominique. As a professor at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles, Brussels, Belgium, he was always willing to provide his deep knowledge of ocean acoustics ranging from propagation theory and practice to the signal processing of truly challenging problems. As a mentor, he willingly shared any information through his experience as the lead investigator on many oceanic projects while he was at the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), La Spezia, Italy.  He was also Principal Investigator as a Researcher/Director at the Environmental HydroAcoustics Laboratory (EHL) of the university.

As a friend, he was always joyful and supportive.  Jean-Pierre was a leader in many facets as a member of the Administrative Committee for the IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society (OES). He was the Chairman of the IEEE OES Technical Committee (TC) on “Ocean Signal Processing and Statistical Learning” and point-of-contact for the “Acoustics and Signal Processing” TC Affinity Group. He was a Fellow of both the IEEE and Acoustical Society of America and an IEEE Distinguished Lecturer for OES.  Professor Hermand pioneered the OES sponsorship of the biannual ``Rio Acoustics Conference’’ as well as motivating much of collaborative efforts in Latin America, Australia and China.

Jean-Pierre will be sorely missed by many.   He departs this world, but will always remain our hearts!
